What is the Biggest, Wildest campaign?
This is a campaign to permanently protect British Columbia’s largest remaining intact wilderness. This special place is called Dene K’éh Kusān, which means “Always Will Be There” in the Kaska Dena Language. It is over 3 million hectares of jaw-dropping natural beauty and grandeur and home to caribou, grizzly bears, Stone’s sheep and millions of migratory birds.
The Kaska First Nations have spent years working on their vision to protect Dene K’éh Kusān for future generations of Canadians to enjoy. From the creation of world-class hiking trails to recreation opportunities, all are welcome here.
So how will it get protected? The Kaska intend to establish the area as an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area, or IPCA, under Kaska laws. At the same time, the B.C. government’s land use planning process is considering protection for the area by designating it as a conservancy under the Park Act. This will mean the area is protected from industrial uses like mining, logging, and oil and gas.
Who is behind this campaign?
The Biggest, Wildest campaign is led by the the BC Chapter of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS-BC) and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) and supported by allied organizations.
How can I help?
We need your help! Our goal is to get 30,000 Canadians across the country, but especially here in BC, to add their name to our petition. You can help spread the word that this special place needs permanent protection so that future generations can enjoy it.
We are calling on friends from diverse organizations to spread the word and protect Dene K’éh Kusān. Our petition is open and has already gained thousands of signatures – but we need your help! Our goal is 30,000 signatures: one for every 100 hectares protected.
What can I share?
